The bitcoin unit ladder
Bitcoin has one base unit in everyday use. 1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshi (10^8). The satoshi, named after bitcoin's creator, is the smallest indivisible amount. Some interfaces also show intermediate units like the bit (100 satoshi), but satoshi and BTC cover almost all developer work.
Where you hit this in real work
Node RPC and exchange APIs report amounts in satoshi to keep them as integers, while users read balances in BTC. A converter that shows both at once lets you sanity-check a UTXO value against a displayed balance without dividing by 100,000,000 by hand.
