Suspicious Activity Report
A Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) is a report a regulated institution files with its financial intelligence unit when it identifies a transaction that may indicate money laundering or other financial crime.
When monitoring flags conduct that lacks a lawful explanation, a compliance team escalates, investigates, and, if suspicion holds, files a SAR to the relevant authority such as FinCEN in the U.S. The filing must summarise the who, what, and why with supporting evidence, and firms must avoid tipping off the subject.
