Structuring

Structuring is the deliberate breaking of a large transaction into multiple smaller ones to evade reporting thresholds and detection.

Also called smurfing, structuring keeps individual transfers below the value that would trigger a report or heightened review, spreading activity across time, addresses, or accounts. In crypto it can resemble a peel chain or many small deposits from distinct addresses that aggregate at one destination. Threshold rules alone miss it, so behavioural monitoring matters. KYT transaction screening on our platform evaluates each transfer in context, and multi-hop fund-flow tracing plus the exposure breakdown can reveal that many small inflows converge from, or fan out to, a single risky cluster, exposing a structured pattern a per-transaction limit would not.
